As you watch TV, listen to your favorite music, or just play a fun video game, you may find yourself asking these questions: Why does it matter what I watch? What difference will my choice of music really make? How could the media possibly effect me? We can either decide to conform to the world, or to stand strong in our faith. Take this study to see what you do.

How do you think the media impacts your life? List the positive and negative impacts.

Think about how the media can change reality from what it really is.
Consider the lies that the media tells you. List several ways you can detect when something isn’t true. How can we avoid being “sucked in” by the lies?

It’s easy to be so consumed by the world and its ways that we don’t even realize the lies that the media is sneaking into our heads. Acts 20:30 says, “Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.”
How might the Media you use dishonor God? (TV, movies, video games). Why would it dishonor God?

Consider this: If Jesus was sitting down next to you while watching one of your favorite shows, would he ask you to change the channel? How have you let your standards of what you watch be adjusted to the world’s view?
In what ways does the media impact what you wear or think? Are the things that the world says are acceptable to wear, truly acceptable by God?

Think of some other things that the media influences you to do. Are these things Godly, or do they build up the kingdom or Christ? Consider Romans 12:2: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Think about the standards TV, movies and video games portray. How do these standards differ from what God’s word says? Why does it become difficult for us to adjust our standards to what God says, or to keep our standards in line with God’s word?

Think about these verses as you evaluate the standards in your life. “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith (1 Timothy 1:18-19).
How do you know if your life is out of balance with watching media, as compared to how much time you spend with God or doing things for God’s kingdom? If you are out of balance, how can you bring balance back?

Evaluate a typical day of your life, and make a list of where most of your time is spent. That will give you an idea of what you value. Read 1 Corinthians 3:10-13. What does this say you should lay the foundation of your life on?
List several ways that you can make good choices about the media that you watch and listen to.

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).
Read Proverbs 3:21. As stated in this verse, how can you develop judgment and discernment with your media choices? What impact might applying these verses have on you and your media choices? (Read Proverbs 2:12)
